Abstract

Subarachnoid block is a widely used anaesthetic technique for caesarean section which offers many advantages to both mother and the baby. The study evaluates the duration of analgesia and the total dose of analgesic given with 24hours following spinal anaesthesia. This is a prospective, randomised, double-blind study, as we compared height-weight adjusted dose using Harten’s chart versus fixed dose of bupivacaine with fentanyl. The time of first analgesic request was longer in the adjusted dose group (8.7hours) than the fixed group (7.67hours), which implies having prolonged time of analgesia and reduction in total amount of opioids given to the patient within 24hours.
